Assessment of market and trade analysis for integrating youth into agricultural value chains in Malawi

  • Identify the major stakeholders in each of the study value chains.
  • Understand inter-value chain linkages between the study value chains.  
  • Identify economic opportunities for youth in the study value chains.
  • Identify the underlying constraints to creating economic opportunities for the youth in the agricultural sector in Malawi specifically in the study value chains.
  • Conduct an end-market analysis of each value chain to determine whether there is unmet market demand and whether the end markets offer competitive prices that motivate the youth to engage in primary production.
  • Develop and map job creation pathways for the youth in Malawi in the agricultural sector.
  • Identify models for increasing the sourcing of commodities that will increase the participation of young farmers in Malawi in the agricultural sector.  

Objectives

Equip Consulting Group is working in partnership with the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) to conduct an in-depth value chain mapping and market assessment as part of an initiative to boost youth employment in Malawi’s agricultural sector.

This project is focused on identifying key market actors, analyzing demand projections, and exploring opportunities to source from youth, women, and smallholder farmers within critical market sheds and trade corridors.

By mapping economic opportunities across all stages of the value chain—from input supply and production to aggregation, processing, and end markets—this initiative aims to pinpoint and enhance sustainable pathways for youth employment and entrepreneurship in agriculture.

This work is integral to AGRA’s commitment to creating dignified jobs and fostering inclusive growth in Malawi’s agricultural sector.
