Launched in 2016, the Buy Malawi Strategy (BMS) builds on the 2009 Buy Malawi Campaign, which aimed to boost local production and encourage Malawians to buy locally made goods. A review of the earlier campaign highlighted challenges such as limited production capacity, inconsistent policies, and product quality issues.
The BMS was developed to address these gaps. Its goal is to stimulate local production and consumption, enhance the competitiveness of Malawian enterprises, and promote industrialisation. The strategy also targets increasing the localisation of government procurement to30%. Expected benefits include job creation, higher incomes, reduced poverty, and lower import spending.

Strategic Focus Areas
The BMS aligns with Malawi 2063, the national vision for a self-reliant, industrialised, and inclusive upper-middle-income nation.
Conduct a comprehensive review of the Buy Malawi Strategy, assessing its effectiveness, governance, membership structures, financial sustainability, and overall economic, social, and environmental impact to inform the continuation of the BMS, including its potential structure and delivery modalities.
